Basic Beliefs - July 2025

In last month’s blog we began to look at the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We saw that the Holy Spirit is the one who draws us to Jesus. And then, He is also the one who regenerates us at the new birth, making us “new creatures in Christ Jesus.” He leads and guides us. He teaches us and shows us things to come. He is the Greater One living in us. Praise the Lord for the work of the Holy Spirit!

Today we want to look at a few of the benefits of being filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in other tongues. We see examples of people being filled with the Holy Spirit throughout the book of Acts. The initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit was on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. The people of Samaria received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in Acts 8:14-17. Then, in Acts 10:44-46 we see the first time that the Gentiles were filled with the Spirit when Peter preached to them in Cornelius’ house.

There are more examples of people being filled with the Spirit and speaking in tongues throughout the books of Acts. But I want to look at the benefits of spending time in prayer and speaking in tongues. I just want to share a couple to encourage you to spend time connecting with our Heavenly Father.

The first benefit of speaking in tongues is that it edifies you. 1 Corinthians 14:4 says, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself.” That word, edifies, means to build up or to charge. How many times has this life left you drained? I know we all have experienced this in our lives. That is the time to begin to pray in the Spirit and let Him recharge you. Don’t let the world dictate your attitude and actions. But connect with your Father by praying in the Spirit and let Him refresh you.

Another benefit of praying in the Spirit is you are praying God’s perfect will. Romans 8:26-27 says, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” You see, when you pray in the Spirit you pray the very will of God. Most of the time we know the situation that needs to be prayed for, but because we are not God we don’t know exactly how to pray. But when we connect with the Spirit in prayer, He knows exactly what to pray, how the pray, and when to pray. Praise the Lord. Your prayer life needs help like that doesn’t it?

These are just a couple of benefits. There are many more. We will be teaching an in-depth study of being filled with the Spirit and speaking in tongues during our Wednesday night Bible study. The series is titled “Pentecost Every Day” and we will be teaching it through out the month of July and even into August. So, come out and be refreshed with the Word.
